June & its Strawberry Moon

This piece was written in June 2023, at the beginning of a month that always feels like a threshold, between spring’s softness and summer’s fullness. I am sharing it here as it was originally written, as a reflection on nature, seasonal change, and the way practice and life often mirror each other.

A brand new month lies ahead of us: JUNE.

I am so happy to finally be here. I wish I could press the slow down button. I wish I could duplicate my energy so I could stay awake from sunrise to sunset.

I enjoy walking in the fields around Barnet and watching the wildflowers blossom. Everything is so green, lush, and full. The leaves have a tender green colour with a velvety, almost fluffy appearance.

It feels like nature is swelling, like the ocean at high tide.

Each front garden seems like a little paradise, filled with blooming peonies, fragrant roses, rhododendrons, and other flowers I cannot always name.

If you missed it last night, the sky is expected to be clear again tonight to watch the full moon rise at around 10:30 PM. Like the sun, the moon rises in the east and sets in the west.

It is called the Strawberry Moon of June.

The energy of June often carries themes of expansion and strength in the body. In yoga, we often explore the energy of Warrior 1, a posture that invites steadiness and focus.

After working with Warrior 2, which opens the hips and heart, Warrior 1 invites us to find steadiness and equal strength, rooted firmly through both feet while reaching up towards the sky.

What is the story behind the Warrior poses?

It is a complex tale of love, ego, and revenge. A myth that reminds us how our reactions can have lasting consequences, and how important it is to pause, step back, and cultivate empathy and perspective before taking action.

A good starting point is simply to take a deep breath in.

Closing reflection

June always feels like a threshold, full, alive, and slightly overwhelming in its abundance.

Nature is in its peak expression, and yet there is a softness in it too, if we slow down enough to notice.

Perhaps this is what the season invites from us as well: to be fully alive, and still aware. To stand like Warrior 1, grounded, steady, and open to the sky above.
